Process

What this path involves

  1. Apply through FARS

Choose the handgun purchase-permit application, enter your SBI number exactly as shown on the FID, and submit to the police agency that serves your legal residence.

  2. Confirm current fees and local payment

As of August 9, 2026, NJSP lists $25 for each handgun permit and a $21 criminal-history check for a subsequent application. The issuing agency may collect its portion separately; confirm before paying.

  3. Watch the permit clock

NJSP says an electronic permit is valid for 90 days and automatically renews once for another 90 days, for a maximum of 180 days. If it expires unused, apply again.

  4. Complete the dealer transfer

The dealer verifies the electronic permit, performs the required NICS check, and records the transfer in the state system. Bring the identifying documents the dealer requests.
